Italian tanning industry: flagship of Made in Italy
The most important customers are traditionally producers of footwear: they buy almost half of the leathers produced at national level (45%). Following buyers are customers from leather industry (21%) and furniture industry (19%), car interiors (7%), clothing (6%) and other products (2%).
Tanning industry is one of the best known worldwide Italian sectors, as data of foreign trade confirm. The export of tanned leather, intended to 116 Countries, currently represents 3/4 of total sales (more than double the percentage 20 years ago), while the foreign supply of raw material, which covers more than 90 % of industry needs, originated from 128 Countries.
